“A bruised reed He will not break…”

Everyone suffers from a wounded heart.

But some people have been so deeply wounded, they have what is known as “complex trauma.”

A deeply wounded person is someone experiencing multiple issues in their lives that make it complicated to see healing unfold. It can be difficult to know how to get at the root issues involved so they can begin to make progress in their journey toward wholeness.

People with complex trauma need someone who can come alongside them and skillfully help them in their journey – a journey that often may last years, not just a few sessions.

Who is this For?

This conference is open to anyone who wants to learn more about complex trauma. It will be especially helpful for mental health professionals, pastoral care ministers, and lay people involved in care ministry.

You’ll have the opportunity to learn from people doing a similar line of work, letting you know that you are not alone on this often lonely road of ministering to the deeply wounded.

Founder & President of Lydia Discipleship Ministries

Dr. Alaine Pakkala has spent nearly thirty years ministering to hurting people. Her understanding of those who are the most shattered – those with dissociative issues – has allowed her to prepare resources to train others. Her passion and sense of humor have mixed together to create insights into how to best come alongside these wounded ones.

For over 20 years Chris has been testing, creating and practicing brain-based solutions to make relationships work. While Chris is highly motivated to develop practical resources, Chris enjoys spending time with Jen and their two sons, Matthew and Andrew. The Coursey’s enthusiastically pass on the skills they missed growing up to their sons.

In addition to building joy on the home front, Chris spends most of his time teaching, training, developing materials, fostering relationships, exercising and equipping God’s people to mature, so they live according to their faith and values.

Chris is a published author with seven books in print including his latest, Transforming Fellowship: 19 Brain Skills That Build Joyful Community which is now translated into Korean. Chris travels the world equipping couples, ministry leaders, and churches in relational brain skills.

Chris earned a B.A. in Sociology from Eastern Illinois University and then started working as a counselor working with children and families with severe trauma. Chris completed his Master’s Degree in Theological Studies from a Messianic Jewish Yeshiva called MBI, or Messianic Bible Institute, out of Virginia. Chris is also an ordained minister.

Founder & Executive Director of the Trauma Healing Center, Inc.

Melissa Finger is the founder and executive director of the Trauma Healing Center, Inc. in Olathe, Kansas. The mission of the Trauma Healing Center is to assist individuals in healing from trauma, partner with other organizations and ministries to further equip them in trauma-informed care, and provide support to Community Caregivers in their own personal and professional development. In addition to this work, Melissa has a master’s degree in Marriage and Family Counseling that she has used in various counseling settings for more than fifteen years. In 2011, she transitioned from professional counseling into biblical counseling. As a biblical counselor her focus has been trauma-informed care for individuals who have a history of severe and complex trauma.

Melissa developed the term Trauma Coping System as a way to describe God’s design for the trauma response of dissociation for children who have been abused. In her first two books, Trauma Coping System, and Trauma Coping System Devotional, Melissa describes God’s design for helping a child survive overwhelming trauma, as well as his design for their complete healing. In addition, Melissa has published two fiction books on this topic. Her 5th book, Living an Abundant Life, is due to be released in summer 2024, and will focus on identity in Christ, spiritual warfare, and embracing God’s design for growth and healing for each person.

Melissa lives in the Midwest and is married with two children. She loves to spend time with her family traveling, attending sports games, hiking, or just hanging around the house. Making relational connections and finding creative outlets are two of her favorite ways to spend her time.
