Session 2: Shattered No More! Healing What’s Broken Due to Sexual Trauma – Dr. Heather Gingrich
Overview: Survivors of sexual trauma often describe feeling fragmented both in terms of their experiences and with respect to their sense of self and identity. In this presentation Dr. Gingrich will describe the BASK model of dissociation, which is an acronym for the four components of a specific memory (Behavior, Affect (or emotion), physical Sensation, and cognitive Knowledge). We will then discuss how the BASK model can be used to help understand some of the symptoms that survivors of sexual trauma experience, and how BASK components can be integrated in order to bring wholeness to what has been broken.
Participants will be able to…
- Describe the BASK model of dissociation.
- Illustrate how the BASK model of dissociation helps to explain some of the symptoms experienced by survivors of sexual trauma.
- Discuss how BASK components can be integrated.
Session 3: Common Obstacles to Finding Healing from Sexual Trauma – Melissa Finger, MS, NCC
Overview: God designed each person to grow and heal – even survivors of sexual trauma. There are few things as amazing as being a part of this healing journey, but there are some common big emotions that can make the journey challenging. Learning to help people deal with these emotions both mentally and spiritually is essential to be an effective helper in the process. Whether clinically minded or a prayer minister, it is important to be aware of these potential obstacles and that we personally grow in our ability to sit with big emotions in others so our own capacity does not become an obstacle to their healing. God designed each person to grow and heal – even clinicians and prayer ministers for survivors of sexual trauma.
Participants will be able to…
- List three of the most common obstacles trauma survivors encounter when seeking healing.
- Identify and respond to the indicators of fear and shame in a healthy manner.
- Recognize and address their own gaps in emotional capacity when assisting clients in healing.
Session 4: Panel Discussion & Q&A – Marcus Warner, Heather Gingrich, Melissa Finger
Overview: Marcus Warner will interact with the other presenters (Heather Gingrich & Melissa Finger) about their presentations and take the conversation deeper. They will also take questions from the livestream audience. Additionally, Dr. Warner will share practical tools, resources, and next steps for you to consider to help you continue to get equipped in helping others seeking healing from sexual trauma.
